Me-made HQ Office
Palisadenstraße 48 is a Wilhelminian-era building in Friedrichshain, originally constructed in 1899/1900 as a transformer and converter station for the Berliner Elektrizitätswerke AG. Sensitively restored in 1999, it is today one of the earliest surviving pieces of evidence of Berlin’s electricity supply, now home to the Umspannwerk Ost restaurant, the Kriminaltheater, and a mix of event, conference, and office spaces.
When ME-made chose Palisadenstraße 48 as their own office, the building’s history and sustainability credentials shaped every decision. The interior concept translates the building’s ecological framework directly into the fit-out — natural materials such as sisal carpeting, linoleum, and cork furniture sit alongside the building’s existing low-temperature wall heating and geothermal cooling systems. Warm colours bring life to the space: burgundy in the redesigned kitchen, soft green on the walls, and a bold black feature wall anchoring a bespoke stepped timber platform with lounge seating. The exposed brick vaulted ceilings, original steel columns, and retro-style lights and switches keep the building’s industrial character present throughout. Existing lightboxes and project banners add a flexible layer to the space that is easily swapped out to reflect new themes, current work, or whatever the moment calls for. The result is a workspace that reflects both who ME-made are and the building they chose to call home.
